Where to go Kayaking on Mayne Island
Depending on weather and tides, paddlers can choose one of the many beaches to start their trip.
The sandy beach at Bennett Bay is known for its calm waters and is an easy place to start, right next to the Mayne Island Resort.
Campbell Bay, another favourite spot for paddlers, is a bit more challenging, as there is a steep path from the car park to the beach.
David’s Cove is a smaller beach by the Strait of Georgia, across from Vancouver, where there are more chances of seeing Orcas and Humpback Whales.
Over by Navy Channel, Piggott Bay and Gallagher Bay are less visited spots for a quieter trip.
Experienced kayakers may also enjoy exploring the waters around Active Pass, although strong currents, ferry traffic, and changing conditions require particular caution.
Keep an eye out for seals, sea lions, otters, bald eagles, and other coastal wildlife as you paddle. Always give wildlife plenty of space and avoid approaching or disturbing animals.
Things to Know Before Kayaking
Before heading out, check the tide tables, wind forecast, and marine conditions. Wear a properly fitted personal flotation device and bring drinking water, sun protection, communication equipment, and appropriate clothing. Tell someone your planned route and expected return time.
